Traditional duct-based cooling systems employ a condenser that sends refrigerant into your home’s interior ducts, where the air circulates throughout your rooms. Better technology and design have resulted in an alternative to the duct system: an A/C ductless system. Not only is it more effective, but it also provides homeowners with an unprecedented level of control over their home’s climate.
What Is a Ductless Air Conditioner?
A/C ductless split systems employ a condenser as a conventional unit does. The condenser sends cooling liquid through copper wiring to the interior of your home. However, instead of a duct system of circulating air, a ductless air conditioner sends the cooling liquid directly to a wall-mounted blower that sends cool air directly into each room. In addition, up to three blowers can be attached to a single condenser. With this type of air conditioner unit, you could effectively create “cooling zones” in your home, setting up areas that can be controlled independently based on usage.
Each blower comes with its own temperature and timer settings. If your rooms only have occupants at certain points in the day, you can set one blower to cool a single area and leave the others off. If you have occupants in every room, the blowers are no less effective. This presents a number of cost-saving opportunities for homes that don’t need every room to be cold all day, every day.
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating at Twice the Legal Requirement
The law states that new units must have a SEER rating of 13, while most ductless units rate in the mid-20s. Thanks to their efficiency, many ductless split air conditioner systems are SEER-rated twice as high as the minimum. This not only saves you money but also reduces your home’s carbon footprint. The lack of ducts also means no rattling, much quieter operation, and less cold air loss.
There are many other advantages that a ductless system provides. Since openings need only be 7–10 cm to connect the condenser to the blower, a less invasive and more affordable installation process is involved.
In addition, condensers can be up to 15 m away from the blowers—potentially reducing the noise level for your home even more.
Common Problems of Ductless Split Air Conditioners
While we certainly recommend A/C ductless systems, no cooling unit is without some kind of issue. With that said, bear in mind that the problems that arise with ductless systems can happen with virtually any type of air conditioner. Thankfully, none of the most common issues are dangerous or destructive. Instead, you may encounter the odd clog in the condensate drain or an occasional minor leak.
Ductless HVAC systems tend to be very well made. They’re hyper-efficient, too. That’s why we recommend them so often. Even when the system breaks down, its multiple air handlers allow you to continue to cool parts of your home. Should something go wrong with your air conditioning, you can always count on help from your local Aire Serv team.
In addition to the condensate clogs and leaks mentioned above, A/C ductless systems may also experience refrigerant leaks (which happens with traditional systems too). Since these systems have more air handler units than average, there are more opportunities for refrigerant leaks to occur. Thankfully, this kind of repair is easy for our expert team of service professionals to fix.
Blower fans can also present issues for A/C ductless systems. Each air handler relies upon a blower fan that blows cool air into your space. Instead of relying on ducts, fans supply cool to your home. With so many fans in place, the odds of a blower fan going on the fritz may increase. Be mindful of this potential, as faulty fans could lead to the eventual breakdown of your air handler.
The Importance of Quality Ductless Split Air Conditioner Installation
Many of the most common ductless split system issues are the result of improper installation. For example, these units function with lines of refrigerant pumping warm air out of your space. If your AC is installed with low charge (or less refrigerant), it’s going to have to work twice as hard to cool your home. Inevitably, this will lead to breakdown.
